I only got to know Father James in recent years here in Alfreton and if ever the phrase ‘ a gentle man’ was deserving, James epitomized it. He was such good company and time spent with him was time well spent, he had a lovely sense of humour and was so professional in all he did. He will truly be missed. There is a quote from an Irish play that comes to mind said by a mother on the death of her son. With profound grief she bequeaths him to God by saying “No man at all can be living… Read more »

Dear Fr James,

What a wonderful man and priest you have been. Always a welcome face at our Deanery meetings and lunches. You would always disappear at the end of lunch for “some fresh air!” – that always made me smile. I know many will miss you both in Alfreton and Grimsby, no more than your faithful PA and friend Laura. May the Risen Lord lead you to His heavenly mansion, for He is the Way the Truth and the Life – may this Eastertide fulfill your hope in the resurrection dear friend.

You quickly settled into Our Lady Star of The Sea and fast became a friend to many. How we have laughed, sang and shared so many moments on our group trips to Ireland and how we have valued your friendship and support over the years as a family. We’re sure Michael will have a whisky ready for you. Thank you for everything. Clare and all the family x

Fr James, I know that your priestly ministry, your gentleness, kindness, care and compassion, and not least, your sense of humour and fun were truly gifts from God. I will always remember what you did for me and my family during your time as our parish priest. Jesus will welcome you home to your eternal reward with these words: “Well done, my good and faithful servant…” RIP.

What a lovely funeral, just perfect for the gentle caring soul you were. Thank you for all you did for us up in Grimsby and especially for me, encouraging me to go for the headship of St Joseph’s, all those years ago.
Rest in peace – you will be missed and thought of with love.

Having listened to the wonderful funeral sermon for Father James, and hearing about James’ early life as a chef, I am reminded of a wonderful and famous quotation by St Teresa of Avila:

‘Know that even when you are in the kitchen, our Lord is moving among the pots and pans’.

Rest in peace Father James. You will be much missed.
